Job Description: Enumerator for Maternal and Child Health Services Coverage Survey

Position Title: Enumerator
Location: Narok County, Kenya
Contract Type: Short-term (Field-based)
Duration: [25 days]
Reports To: Field Supervisor / Project Manager

Overview of the Role

We are conducting a vital survey to assess the coverage of maternal and child health services in Narok County. The survey will help to understand the factors influencing access to and use of health services, such as antenatal care, immunization, and nutrition programs. We are seeking enumerators to collect high-quality data from households and health facilities.

The ideal candidate will be a detail-oriented, organized individual with previous experience in data collection or fieldwork, particularly in healthcare-related surveys. The enumerator will play a critical role in ensuring the accuracy and integrity of the data collected during the survey.

Key Responsibilities

  1. Data Collection:
    • Conduct face-to-face interviews with selected households and health facilities using structured questionnaires.
    • Accurately record responses on SurveyCTO or similar data collection software using tablets.
    • Ensure that the questionnaires are completed correctly, including any follow-up questions or clarifications as needed.
    • MUST possess a smart-phone with accurate GPS functionalities
  2. Obtain Informed Consent:
    • Explain the purpose of the survey to the respondents, ensuring that they understand and agree to participate.
    • Obtain informed consent from all participants before proceeding with the interview.
  3. Adherence to Survey Protocols:
    • Follow survey guidelines and protocols strictly, ensuring that questions are asked in a neutral and non-leading manner.
    • Respect the confidentiality and privacy of the respondents at all times.
    • Use probing techniques when necessary to obtain complete and relevant responses without influencing the participant’s answers.
  4. Reporting and Data Upload:
    • Submit completed questionnaires and upload data to the central database on a daily basis.
    • Report any challenges, refusals, or issues encountered during fieldwork to the Field Supervisor immediately.
  5. Quality Assurance:
    • Double-check entries to ensure the accuracy and completeness of all collected data.
    • Conduct follow-up visits or re-interviews where necessary to clarify data inconsistencies or gaps.
  6. Logistical and Administrative Duties:
    • Work according to the assigned schedule and meet daily and weekly data collection targets.
    • Coordinate logistics such as travel between field locations and maintain an organized fieldwork plan.
  7. Communication and Teamwork:
    • Maintain good communication with team members, supervisors, and community stakeholders.
    • Participate in daily debriefing sessions to discuss progress and challenges with the field team.

Required Qualifications

  • Education: Minimum of a Diploma in Public Health, Social Sciences, or a related field.
  • Experience:
    • Previous experience as an enumerator or data collector, especially in household surveys.
    • Experience in public health services is an added advantage.
    • Familiarity with using mobile data collection tools such as SurveyCTO,  or other mobile data collection platforms.
  • Technical Skills:
    • Ability to use tablets/ smartphones and digital tools for data entry and upload.
    • Proficiency in basic computer skills, including familiarity with Excel or other data software.
  • Languages:
    • Fluent in English and Kiswahili. Knowledge of local languages (e.g., Maasai) is an advantage.
  • Personal Attributes:
    • Excellent interpersonal and communication skills.
    • Strong attention to detail and ability to work independently in the field.
    • Ability to handle sensitive information discreetly.
    • Physically fit and willing to travel long distances and work in rural or remote areas.
    • Be a person of high integrity

Working Conditions

  • Field-based work in rural and urban areas of Narok County.
  • Long hours, including potential weekend work depending on the data collection schedule.
  • Frequent travel to remote locations by foot, motorbike, or public transport.

Remuneration

  • A competitive daily allowance will be provided based on performance, experience, and the duration of the contract.
  • All transportation costs for fieldwork will be covered.
